Innovation Essential to India’s Knowledge-Driven Future: Minister Majumdar at IISER Kolkata

KOLKATA – Union Minister of State for Education and Minister of State for the Development of the Northeastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar, underscored the vital role of innovation in shaping an inclusive, knowledge-driven India during his address at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata on July 16, 2026.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the Summer Camp 2026, Majumdar called upon the student community to prioritize research and entrepreneurship, noting that today’s innovative efforts are essential for cultivating the “unicorns of tomorrow.”

Fostering Scientific Inquiry

The Summer Camp 2026 is a collaborative initiative between IISER Kolkata, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and Science City Kolkata. The program hosts 70 students from Classes XI and XII across the seven Northeastern states.

Why This Matters

Minister Majumdar identified the Northeast as a key strength for India, citing its diverse cultural and knowledge base. By integrating these students into advanced research environments, the initiative builds a national talent pipeline committed to evidence-based discovery.

Kolkata Connection

Hosted at IISER Kolkata’s Mohanpur campus, the event highlights Kolkata’s pivotal role in coordinating high-level educational initiatives. Local participation from Ramkrishna Mission-Kalyani and KVS regional authorities underscores the city’s standing as a hub for regional academic collaboration.

Additional Context

  • Program Scope: A week-long immersive experience running through July 22, 2026.
  • Curriculum: Designed to provide hands-on exposure to emerging fields and promote interdisciplinary learning.

What’s Next

Following the conclusion of the camp on July 22, participants are expected to carry their research experiences into their future academic careers, contributing to the broader national goal of a knowledge-driven economy.
