Howrah, 25 October 2026: District health authorities have stepped up mosquito-control measures after more than 150 dengue infections were reported in Howrah Municipal Corporation and neighbouring areas between 14 and 20 October. The recent increase follows a period in which Howrah city recorded approximately 350 cases over seven months, according to local reports.

Which areas are affected?

Of the recent cases, 47 were reported within Howrah municipal limits. Bankra Number 1 gram panchayat recorded at least 19 infections, with localities including Mondalpara, New Mondalpara and Uttarpara mentioned in reporting. These figures describe identified clusters and should not be treated as a complete, continuously updated case dashboard.

Reports said 94 patients with health complications were admitted to Howrah District Hospital and one seriously ill patient was referred to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. No death toll was established in the sources reviewed for this article.

Why stagnant water matters

Howrah’s chief medical officer of health, Kishalay Dutta, linked some localised increases to waterlogging and drains clogged with rubbish. Health and local administration teams reportedly intensified vector-control operations, spraying and waste clearance.

Dengue spreads through bites from infected Aedes mosquitoes. Preventive steps include removing water from containers and plant trays, keeping stored water covered, using appropriate mosquito protection and seeking medical advice for fever or warning symptoms. Medical tests and treatment should follow clinical guidance; self-medication can be risky.

What should happen next?

Rapid response to case clusters must be paired with reliable drains, waste collection and publicly accessible local surveillance. Without sustained neighbourhood-level interventions, case numbers can rebound after the immediate campaign ends.

Mojo Pulse perspective: Dengue control is a city-services story as well as a health story. Consistent maintenance between outbreaks matters as much as emergency spraying once cases rise.
