Kolkata, 23 October 2026: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has invited bids for an estimated ₹297.45 crore electrical and traction systems contract for Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line. The package covers key infrastructure for the corridor’s underground stretch towards Esplanade and an elevated section near IIM Kolkata, representing another step in the long-term expansion of metro connectivity across south and central Kolkata.
The tender, listed under reference RVNL-KOL-EL-METRO-21, calls for the engineering, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 33 kV power distribution equipment, traction and auxiliary substations, and a 750 V DC third-rail system. Tender listings show a 26 November 2026 bid submission deadline.
What does RVNL’s ₹297.45 crore Purple Line tender cover?
The contract is for the electrical systems that make metro train operations possible. Its scope includes:
- 33 kV power distribution: the infrastructure required to receive and distribute electricity for railway operations and station systems.
- Traction substations: equipment that converts and supplies electrical power for metro trains.
- Auxiliary substations: power arrangements for essential station and other non-traction services.
- 750 V DC third rail: the system that supplies electric power to trains through a conductor rail alongside the running tracks.
- Testing and commissioning: checks needed before the installed systems can be considered ready for operational use.
These works are separate from building tunnels, platforms or stations themselves. Even where civil structures are completed, reliable electrical infrastructure remains essential before a new metro section can carry passengers.
Which stretches of the Kolkata Metro Purple Line are included?
According to the tender description, the package includes four underground metro stations between Mominpur (excluding Mominpur itself) and Esplanade, together with associated tunnels. It also covers the IIM station and the elevated viaduct section from beyond Joka to IIM.
The works form part of the wider Diamond Park–Joka–Esplanade corridor. The planned expansion is intended to link more southern neighbourhoods with central Kolkata, giving commuters an alternative to road traffic along some of the city’s busiest routes.
For clarity, the tender describes the limits of the electrical works package. It does not mean that every station named in the broader Purple Line plan is included in this particular contract.

What will the tender mean for Kolkata commuters?
When the outstanding sections are built, equipped, tested and approved for passenger use, the Purple Line is expected to strengthen connections between southern residential areas and the city centre. The longer-term benefit could include easier access to major commercial districts and connections with other metro services.
For daily passengers, however, the latest tender is a procurement milestone—not an announcement of a new service launch. Electrical equipment must still be contracted, installed and commissioned, while other construction, integration and statutory safety requirements will also need to be fulfilled.
Key tender dates and contract value
- Contracting agency: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL)
- Reference number: RVNL-KOL-EL-METRO-21
- Estimated tender value: ₹297.45 crore
- Earnest money deposit: ₹2 crore, according to published tender listings
- Bid submission deadline: 26 November 2026
- Listed contract completion period: 42 months, subject to final terms and project execution
It is important to distinguish the estimated tender value from an awarded contract or money already spent: RVNL is currently inviting bids for the specified works. The final contract terms, award and delivery schedule will depend on the procurement process. Prospective bidders should confirm deadlines and any amendments in the official railway tender documents.
Why power infrastructure matters to the Purple Line’s progress
Metro development does not end with track laying or station construction. Traction power, signalling, communications, ventilation and other systems need to work together before services can operate safely. In a partly underground corridor, the technical integration of these systems is especially significant.
RVNL’s tender therefore addresses a foundational requirement for future train movements on the designated Purple Line sections. It is a necessary component of the expansion, although it does not establish a revised passenger-opening date for the Mominpur–Esplanade stretch or the wider corridor.
For commuters in Behala, Joka and the surrounding southern suburbs, the key question remains how soon the unfinished infrastructure can be integrated into an operational service. The next concrete development to watch is the tender process itself, followed by contract award and execution milestones.
